About this deal

As a favour to his mother David drops into his cousin Marla’s place with some home-cooked meals. Marla, he knows, has been struggling since she lost her baby 10mths earlier and gets little sympathy from her own mother who’s frustrated at her daughter’s inability to move on. On arriving at Marla’s however, David finds her busy with her son… who she informs David was dropped off by an angel the day before. All of this had me intrigued and interested in what was going to happen next. But as more people were introduced in the story I found it harder to keep everyone and everything straight. There are a TON of characters in this book. There were a few times that I got characters mixed up and it took a bit of time to get things figured out again. This book is the second in a trilogy. I read the first one, Broken Promise, in August of 2015. I'd kept notes on the first book, but it seems I really didn't need to because they didn't help with this book. Things that should have been remembered were mentioned in this book, and I was very surprised that I recalled them. During his inquiries David speaks to the dead woman's husband and doctor, and tries to find the baby's nanny - who seems to be missing.

Cal Weaver has been asked to read Chandler Carson's short story. The story has gotten Chandler suspended for three days and his mother is livid. The story tells the tale of two friends who go into the woods together, but only one comes out, the other lies in the woods beaten to death with a baseball bat.Initially I wasn't going to finish this read because the ARC I received was hard to read. After one of my Goodreads friends saying just trudge through it, I became totally absorbed in this small town. There are a lot of characters and we are given glimpses into their lives. Suddenly the strings start to weave together how everyone is connected.

The book ends with a delicious cliffhanger. The main mystery has not been solved, as the killings may be connected to an older case. There is a message someone is trying to send. Is it revenge? Is the killer walking among them, and someone they all know? And oh, more with hidden secrets, yet to come to the surface. I am dying for the next installment! Here is hoping I can land an ARC, as the suspense is killing me. Kudos, Mr. Barclay for such an addictive piece of work. I am hooked and can only hope that you will continue to dazzle and intrigue as you build on this series for your avid fans. I did guess some of the major twists which was a bit of a disappointment because I really like to be surprised. There were enough twists that I didn't predict to keep the story interesting for me. I do wish that all of my questions had been answered. As it stands, I feel like I only received answers to some of my questions. I wouldn't say that the ending was cliffhanger because the main focus of the story was resolved even though a lot of questions do remain. An excellent read. I also got a sneak peek and the third book coming in November 2016 ... and it looks like it's going to be a wild ride to the finish. With David’s first day out of work, his mom wants him to run an errand for her. Little does he know running this simple errand will land him in the middle of a murder investigation? He is to take some food to his cousin Marla. Simple enough. Marla has been through some traumatic events—an online reviewer, she got pregnant by a younger college student, her mom (David’s aunt) did not care for. The baby was stillborn 10 mos earlier, and Marla has not recovered, and afterwards caught stealing another baby from the hospital. Of course, her mom is the hospital administrator and takes care of covering things, as she is all about control and appearances. A truly explosive start to the second book in the Promise Falls trilogy, Far From True sees Linwood Barclay once again meddling with the townspeople in the unfortunate enclave of Upstate New York with a ludicrously low life expectancy. Broken Promise, the first of the series introduced the washed-up town in economic dire straits and if you read the first then there is every reason to return for this super second course. Having been introduced to many of the inhabitants of Promise Falls, regardless of how contrived they appeared (and the baddies are hideously comical), they certainly stay with the audience and Barclay concluded the first book with a number of unresolved issues. Whilst not every question that arose during the course of Broken Promise is followed through, quite a few are and more to the point, Barclay introduces a rash of new 'incidents' into the lives of his characters. Michael’s mom is a friend of the family, and Suzanne is now calling Cal for help. Michael did not come home. He is missing. Now in the middle, he is trying to help.

Various characters from the first book are on hand once again. Former journalist David Harwood..... Highly Recommend! Thriller fans will devour this new and exciting series. 5 Stars + (my kind of book). The four teenagers were determined to enjoy the final night of the local drive-in theatre – but Derek had drawn the short straw to be smuggled in for free – in the trunk. It was while the others were arguing with the man on the gate that the explosion occurred. The huge movie screen fell forward, almost in slow motion, and four people were crushed to death in their cars.Linwood Barclay is the #1 internationally bestselling author of seventeen novels for adults, including No Time for Goodbye, Trust Your Eyes and, most recently, A Noise Downstairs. He has also written two novels for children and screenplays. He can’t believe Marla’s capable of such violence and finds himself believing her story about the angel so sets about trying to prove her innocence. We also meet Lucy Brighton, the head of the guidance department at the school. (Look out for more from Lucy and Cal in) FAR FROM TRUE. Get out your scorecard, as there is so much in store, it will keep your head spinning!

Trust Your Eyes". Trailer, Bantam. 2012. p.l. Archived from the original on 2014-06-25 . Retrieved 2014-02-18.Cal Weaver, PI has been called to one of the more upscale neighborhoods of Promise Falls from a frantic mom, Greta, requesting some dirt on the local high school staff. Their son, Chandler apparently had written a colorful short story for one of his classes—now he finds himself being treated like some sort of psychotic degenerate. Chandler’s English teacher asked them to write something creative, and imaginative. There are several story lines running parallel to each other, but at some point they start dovetailing. Barclay's novella (Book #1.5) Final Assignment sets us up for Cal Weaver's point of view in this novel. Cal, former cop turned private investigator, is a likeable and a character you root for so it was very easy to look forward to more of him in the next book. Far From True opens up with the a drive-in theater screen collapsing and killing four people. Cal is hired by the daughter of one of the victims to look into a break-in at her late father's place. As he investigates Cal learns that this couple has a secret room for their sexual games and it appears that DVD discs are now missing. What is on the DVD and why they were taken is Cal's next steps. Broken Promise by Linwood Barclay is published by Penguin Group and released in Australia by Hachette and available from 28 July 2015.
