Gary, a fan of the Ghostbusters, helps her learn more about them and her grandfather. He, Phoebe, and Podcast tamper with the trap, releasing one of Gozer the Gozerian's Sentinels, which escapes to the mine. The farm ghost leads Phoebe to Egon's underground laboratory who, after revealing himself as her grandfather, guides her in restoring the Ghostbusters' equipment. The links to the past work well and the introduction of the new characters makes it a good balance of old nostalgia and future possibilities. We’re clearly going to be seeing a whole lot more from the franchise in the coming years, but even if Afterlife ended up being the last entry in the series, it would still be a mini triumph.
